A CLIMBER who suffered multiple fractures in a 200ft fall on Ben Nevis is “feeling lucky”, his wife said yesterday.

Businessman Nick Harper, 57, was rescued by helicopter after falling while climbing with two other men last month.

He fractured his skull and pelvis, along with 14 ribs.

But his wife Judi yesterday revealed he is expected to make a full recovery.

On Saturday, Nick, the chairman of a waste management company, was transferred from Glasgow Southern General to a hospital nearer his Yorkshire home.

Judi said: “he has just defied all medical logic. he was fortunate in the circumstances in that there was the right medical help very, very quickly.

“the RAF pilot was excellent and got through in very difficult conditions.

“he had two excellent doctors in Fort William and excellent care in Glasgow.

“he is in good spirits and feeling a lot more comfortable and feeling his luck really.

“the family are delighted. It has been a miracle.”

Nick, who has two daughters, Nina, 32, and Claire, 34, was on a north face route of Ben Nevis known as the Cascades when he fell. It is still unclear what caused the accident.

● Three climbers escaped injury when they were carried on an avalanche almost 1km wide down a corrie in the Cairngorms – just missing nearby skiers.

The near miss last Monday was one of a number of avalanches on Scottish mountains in recent weeks. the SportScotland Avalanche Information Service have warned walkers and climbers to pay close attention to avalanche alerts.
