CBS dispatched its reality thug Undercover Boss to Fridays to show rivals who is, er, boss.

Moving over from Sunday nights, Boss (10.7 million viewers, 2.4 adults 18-49 rating) was easily Friday’s top-rated broadcast show, putting a beat down on ABC’s recently improving Shark Tank (5.7 million, 1.5), which fell 17 percent from last week’s season high. On its other flank, Boss also crushed Fox’s Kitchen Nightmares (3.1 million, 1.3).

The 8 p.m. Boss gave a lead in to CBS’ struggling freshman drama A Gifted Man (9.5 million, 1.5), now moved to 9 p.m. and tying CSI: NY‘s average in the spot. though Gifted was 25 percent higher than the show’s average, the medical drama is considered a long-shot to to earn a second season.

ABC managed to edge out CBS to win the night, however, thanks to 20/20 devoting two hours to Whitney Houston (7.9 million, 2.0). also Friday: Fox’s Fringe (3 million, 1.1) was unchanged in the demo. CBS’ Blue Bloods (10.6 million, 1.6) was OK. Ratings for the CW’s Nikta (1.6 million, 0.6) and Supernatural (1.7 million, 0.7) were pretty standard.

Resilience is the child from an abusive and disadvantaged home who graduates from college at the top of her class; the severely disabled man in the film My Left Foot, who became a writer and artist; my father who has experienced numerous medical crises and still appreciates every day. these are ordinary people faced with extraordinary circumstances who found within themselves the capacity to prevail.

Resilience is not about a falsely optimistic, pollyanna view of the world. It is about being realistic with what happens, feeling intense feelings, and not turning away from struggling. It is common, apprehensible, and available to all of us. The Essence of Resilience: not Being a Victim

How to be resilient? the short answer is: don’t identify yourself as a victim. Resilient people understand that anything can happen. they realize that the world isn’t fair and that difficult things can happen to the most wonderful people. they feel their emotional reactions, then figure out how to pick themselves up and move forward. It might take a long time and happen in tiny increments, but the predominant movement is toward living and not just existing.

Being resilient means understanding that we cannot control what happens to us, but that we can control how we relate to what happens. We get to choose. We can carry around the tragic events of our lives, letting them color the way we view ourselves and the world, or we can prosper.

The good news is that victimhood is perpetuated by the stories we tell ourselves. why good news? Because being a victim is not inherent in the events that actually befall us; it is a choice we can make by the thoughts we support with our attention. Paying attention is like giving fertilizer to a plant – what we feed is what becomes our reality. Elizabeth Smart knows this first hand. she said, If you sit there and think about it all the time, you’re giving them more power over your life.

admin <![CDATA[REVIEW: Comedy corrals laughs from chaos, on and off stage]]> http://www.cybersmarts.net/review-comedy-corrals-laughs-from-chaos-on-and-off-stage.html 2012-02-19T15:00:20Z 2012-02-19T15:00:20Z Theatre Tuscaloosa’s “Noises Off,” running — and leaping, tumbling and stumbling — in the Bean-Brown Theatre, is balletic in the sense that movements must be choreographed, moments coordinated so that the whole thing won’t fall apart. It’s comic in the sense that even if something did go horribly wrong, it’d be easy to mistake it for part of the script. Except there might be actual, instead of feigned, blood.

“Noises Off” is a play about a play, “nothing on,” a mediocre if not outright horrible farce, shown in three bits of its existence. the first act is a clumsy dress rehearsal when it seems nothing will indeed go on. the second act spins the entire two-story set around to show the audience there’s even wilder mayhem backstage, among the alcoholic, lovelorn and jealous cast, as it bumbles through a mid-run matinee performance. the third act turns the set back, and shows the play in its death throes, as all the betrayals, rivalries and misunderstandings threaten to implode onstage.

So this farce behind the farce is every producer or director’s nightmare, every actor’s worry — am I one, or all, of those divas, ditzes and dullards? — and, thanks to schadenfreude, an audience’s delight.

As the adage more-or-less goes: Tragedy is when I fall down; comedy is when you fall down. Many things succumb to gravity in “Noises Off,” including pants, sheets, axes, bottles, bottoms, dignity and more pants. Props should go to props, stage management and other Theatre Tuscaloosa crew just for keeping the blur of dresses, flowers, boxes, bags and so on in all their places.

Part of the fun of “Noises Off” is the insider thing: Playwright Michael Frayn was clearly mocking himself, as a writer of similar lame farces. the actors and crew of Theatre Tuscaloosa’s production might well know some of these types and traumas, from personal experience or observation. It’s tempting to ponder just who Gary Wise, playing “I am God” director Lloyd Dallas might have patterned his sometimes condescendingly patient, sometimes hairily explosive, usually cleverly manipulative moves on.

Certainly not from actual director Tina F. Turley, who has done a rather deity-like job herself of corraling this into balletic chaos. while even slapstick comedy can’t be purely mechanical — if you don’t somehow relate to or care for the characters, it’s as hollow as most Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey messes — there is so much of the physical required here that it’s a kind of miracle this thing not only works, but makes you miss the characters afterward.

As always with the ever-

present and ever-entertaining Wise, whatever and whomever he might have been inspired by, it becomes all his on stage. he is the spot-on leader for this motley band, just caring enough to get things done, but clearly very much his own egomaniac.

For “Noise Off” to cook, it must have a Dotty. Drew Baker plays the heart of the show, the veteran actress who’s invested her own money in this production of “nothing on,” hoping to have a hit and “set a little something aside” for her approaching retirement years. But Dotty is more saucy Helen Mirren than dignified Judi Dench; it’s her affair with younger actor Garry (Will Nevin) that sparks much friction in the second and third acts. Baker has the great deceptive quality of projecting maternal warmth, concealing a sharper, darker wit that breaks out in the latter acts, the knife within the velvet sheath.

Charles Prosser earns much of the love and many of the biggest belly-laughs with his dim-witted Frederick, who is so mercifully free of the ravages of intelligence that he really, really can’t see the director is about to strangle him for continuing to seek motivation at midnight, or that sweet Belinda (Brooke Wood) wants to jump his bones.

Not as experienced in years, but warmly welcome back to Tuscaloosa after 15 years working in Los Angeles and new York, is Wood, who invests vigorous life into what can be an overlooked part, as less-neurotic Belinda seemingly loves and gets along with everyone. although the enabler of the group, she happily gets to let go in a scene or two, providing some of that Baker-esque twist, from darling to monster in a flash, and then back to form.

Wescott Youngson also plays dotty, lower-case, as senior actor Selsdon, bowling over his drunken goon’s role with charm and fervor. Molly Page embodies the vapid Brooke with helium and butterflies and a dose of lust; what’s most remarkable and perhaps not as noticed by the opening-night audience, in the rush of gags in the third act, is how Brooke keeps going like the Energizer bunny-tank, completely oblivious of how the show’s falling apart.

Elliot Moon, as go-to flunky Tim, and Susie Johnson, as stage manager Poppy, have fewer moments, but shine in the backstage second act, running ragged and finding musical changes in the most mundane of stage announcements. Nevin has another of those thankless parts, as Garry who must mostly register concern. while he needs a few more years perhaps to rise up to the flexible embodiment of some of his fellow actors, he has some fine bits, including the axe shtick which turns into a Harlem Globetrotters-style circus act, capped perfectly by Moon’s finest and fastest move of the night, one of those coordinations of comic timing that make a highly mechanical, but not heartless, show such as “Noises Off” shine.

We can only assume that doom and despair will follow.

Both men are paragons in Republican virtue. Mitt Romney is a candidate who revises his books between revisions to win over undecided voters. He’s a man who has helped inspire Obama’s healthcare policy. his image is as malleable as his hair. as for Chris Christie, he is foul-mouthed and clumsy, and after revelations that came to light when Christie was primed to run for president, not much of a conservative.

Both men are certainly representative of America’s ruling class. Romney is plastic, fake, and wins crowds over through carefully crafted buzz phrases and a mass-produced charisma. Christie seems genuine, however inarticulate.

Following the endorsement, the Romney campaign sent an email to supporters on behalf of Christie claiming that this was the most important election in generations. Just like the last one Romney ran in, and every election a candidate has stood for office since the first of the elections. We dare say that it would be unpopular to admit that this election, like so many others, will do little to avert the upcoming disaster.

No president, no Congressman, no new Jersey governor, no human being can stand in the way of the awesome collapse that is upon us. National Bankruptcy is the price that must be paid for Moral Bankruptcy. The system of bribes, schemes, and lies cannot stand forever. now, it seems that we can no longer postpone what generations before us decided we would have to face. no politician can create jobs any more than they can stand in the way of an almost supernatural storm.

National Bankruptcy is the ultimate liquidation process. Darkness must cede to light, lies to truth, and corruption to honest trade. The current system propagates itself by printing paper and calling it money. It exists solely as long as people have faith in the US government. when that faith truly and fully falters, the paper becomes worthless and the government defaults on its obligations.

As Republicans attempt to persuade the Occupy Wall Street protesters to fuel their rage against the politicians, they should be careful that people don’t really lose faith in the politicians. If they do, the entire system falls apart and the election really will cease to be relevant.

National Bankruptcy is the ultimate penalty for bad government. It’s nothing specific to us, it’s the penalty for continuous bad government. It only, as Thomas Carlyle taught us, falls on the dumbest person who can’t pawn it off on anyone else.

After he served ten years as an analyst, MSNBC has shown Pat Buchanan the door.

Protests have gone on for years about Buchanan’s statements and perceived racism. Buchanan maintains that this is all a conspiracy by the left to have him ousted. And, there were coordinated and concerted efforts to petition and pressure MSNBC to can him.

Most who are happy to see him go can recite certain statements that Buchanan has made over the years, including:

  • “The decline in academic test scores here at home and in international competition is likely to continue, as more and more of the children taking those tests will be African-American and Hispanic.”
  • “[The decline of the Jewish population in America] is a result of the collective decision of Jews themselves. From Betty Friedan to Gloria Steinem in the 1970s to Ruth Bader Ginsburg today, Jewish women have led the battle for abortion rights. The community followed.”
  • “Through history, all the great religions have condemned homosexuality and all the great nations have proscribed or punished it. none ever placed homosexual liaisons on the same plane as traditional marriage, which is the bedrock institution of any healthy society.”
  • “If we do not get control of our borders, by 2050 Americans of European descent will be a minority in the nation their ancestors created and built.”
  • Upon news of his firing, people took to Twitter to express glee or outrage, depending on their lean:

NKU is ranked 15th. Eshaunte Jones scored 15 points, while Chad Jackson and DeAndre Nealy each added eleven points. It’s the 20th win for NKU.

    NEXT: no. 11 Southern Indiana comes to the Bank of Kentucky Center to face NKU Saturday at 3 p.m. Southern Indiana beat top-ranked Bellarmine on Thursday night.

    THE COLLEGE BASKETBALL SCOREBOARD:

    Michigan State 69, Wisconsin 55…..the Spartans have won six of their last seven games.

    Florida State 48, Virginia Tech 47…Seminoles on a three-pointer with two seconds left.

    TOO LOUD IN EAST LANSING: in the Michigan State win, the fans were extremely loud. in fact, there were a number of times that Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan tried to yell at official Mike Sanzere. But Sanzere says he couldn’t hear Ryan over the crowd noise.

    THE WOMEN’S GAME: NKU women won their game at Kentucky Wesleyan 69-66. Casse Mogan scored 26 points and scored the go-ahead basket at the four minute mark.  It’s the 19th win for NKU.

    ELMIRA 3, CYCLONES 1:  Elmira scored twice in the third period for the win before 2,374 at US Bank Arena. the Cyclones remain home for tonight’s 7:30 game against Kalamazoo.

    THE “KID”: Gary Carter was one of those baseball players that played with enthusiasm, smiled all the time, and genuinely seemed to enjoy playing baseball.  it wasn’t an act.  That’s the way Carter was. He was an 11-time All-Star and a three-time Gold Glove winner.  He died Thursday at age 57.

    A TRUE TALENT: Carter played 19 years in the majors with the Expos, Mets, Giants and Dodgers. He was the first player to go into the Baseball Hall of Fame with an Expos cap on his plaque.

    CLUTCH: Carter helped take the Expos to the postseason in 1981 and he hit .429 with two homers, four doubles and six rbi’s. in 1986, he had two homers and nine rbi’s when the Mets won the World Series. He was also named MVP of the All-Star games in 1981 and 1984.

    MEDIA FRIENDLY: When Carter was at the top of his game in the early 80′s, I went to the visitor’s clubhouse at Riverfront Stadium and asked if he could do an interview.  He came out to the waiting area and we talked on camera for several minutes. not a fake. Very gracious.

    THE RETURN: Website MLBTradeRumors.com says the Reds are going to sign pitcher Brett Tomko to a minor league contract.  Tomko was the Reds top draft pick in 1995.  He pitched here from 1997-99 and was part of the deal that brought Ken Griffey Junior to the Reds.

    TALKIN’ BASEBALL: I taped an extensive interview with Reds General Manager Walt Jocketty before he departed for Spring Training. We’ll air that interview Sunday night on Meijer Sports of All Sorts at 11:35 p.m. Pitchers and catchers report to Goodyear, Arizona on Sunday.

    HERE WE GO AGAIN: Phil Mickelson who rallied to win Sunday at Pebble Beach, has the first round lead at the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. He chipped in from 35 feet away on the 18th hole for a 5-under par 66.  He leads J.B Holmes by a stroke.

One of the nicest attractions en route is the Ke’anae Peninsula which is well worth a stop, especially for the breathtaking vista of the peninsula with its fields of taro from the lookout point above the town. there are some great parks to see on the way too, such as Pua’aka’a State Wayside Park with a beautiful waterfall, and Wai’anapanapa State Park with its black sand beach and lava tube, which is a great photo opportunity looking out the tube to the sea. you may even see some sea turtles swim by

    Usually the trip to the town of Hana takes about half a day, so you will probably arrive at lunch-time. The Hotel Hana-Maui has great food in a beautiful natural setting; the Hana Ranch Restaurant is also recommended, especially if you are in a hurry. After lunch, check out the Hana Coast Gallery, which is one of the best art galleries in Hawaii. another Hana adventure for the whole family is the 3-mile hike to Fagan’s Cross, located high on the hill above Hana with breathtaking views of the harbor and coast around Hana; and Hookipa beach, which is famous for windsurfing. Leaving Hana for the south you should visit Hamoa Beach, which is one of the most spectacular in Maui. at Kipahulu, visit Haleakala National Park with the amazing Ohe’o Gulch pools, with waterfalls cascading down from one pool to the next. South of Kipahulu the road gets a bit bumpy, but it is much faster returning to Maui condos this way than going back the long way through Hana since there are far fewer hairpin turns and bridges. If you want to avoid the long drive yourself, there are guided tours available from the resort areas of Kapalua,,Honokowai, Kaanapali, Makena, and Wailea/Kihei which leave around 7 am and return around 6 pm. The cost is about $80 for adults and $50 for children, and includes box lunch, beverage, and a guide who will educate and entertain with tales and facts about the sights along the way.

    In addition to the iPad, the issue is also available on the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Nook Color, Kindle fire, Motorola Xoom and Android smartphones for $6.99. A redesigned iPhone edition, which strips the magazine to the issue’s photographic and rich media content, has also been released.

    Chris Hercik, creative director of the Sports Illustrated Group, made a few tweaks to the tablet edition of this year’s Swimsuit. Horizontal and vertical layouts now align perfectly, making it easier for readers to switch between modes. the issue is also more interactive, with 65 streaming videos, scrollable text and galleries, and 360-degree rotating models. (Unfortunately for many readers, zooming capabilities are severely limited.)

    About a third of the video content is exclusive to the tablet edition. Still more are available on SI.com and YouTube. Videos of the week’s launch events are also livestreaming to the magazine’s Facebook Page.

    Elsewhere, SI has teamed up with Gilt Groupe for a themed sale: think swimwear, surfboards and posters (already sold out). the sale isn’t for profit — 100% of purchase prices are going to benefit the Nature Conservancy — but rather a promotional exchange.

    It’s also an opportunity for SI to test online consumers’ appetites for branded merchandise. A spokesperson for SI said that an ecommerce extension “is on the to-do list in the coming year or two” but that the publication is “still thinking deeply about what that means.”

    There are a few places Swimsuit is conspicuously absent this year. despite the attention it garnered in 2011, SI has not formatted a special Swimsuit issue for Flipboard. nor is the publication releasing any 3D video. “you need such a wide band to shoot 3D. when you’re out on mountains and on the water, that’s really hard to do,” a spokesperson explained. That being said, Apple TV owners will still be able to view digital content on their flatscreens using AirPlay.

    Swimsuit is big business for SI, accounting for about 7% of the publication’s annual revenue. With more platforms and ecommerce on the horizon, that stake could grow.

    How bad is It? The notice told you that you have ten days to either pay the debt in full, or set up a payment arrangement. You could easily go from having a 750 credit score to a 500, just from having a tax lien.

    Your Assets are in Trouble: The IRS can also place a lien on any of your assets such as your house or your car. mostly, this lien is saying that the IRS is holding the ownership of the asset. but the longer you go without resolving your debt, the closer the IRS gets to turning a lien into a seizure. when this happens, they seize the property entirely and sell it in an auction in order to pay the debt. Trust me; the IRS has no problem putting people out on the street if it means getting their money.

    Make it stop: A tax lien can be removed. but depending on your situation it can be difficult. not to mention that if you are going to have a lien removed, you must of course set up some form of payment to the IRS. The best way to do this is to seek professional help. Look for a resolution company with an excellent track record. they will be able to help you resolve you issue so you don’t have to worry about bad credit or worse, no place to live
