Sloth And Idleness – How To Overcome Them

In this day and age when we are bombarded with so many things instant, the tendency to slack off becomes all the more tempting. a lot of the basic things we need are now at our beck and call. Almost gone are the days when exerting effort is required in order to do something, rendering our minds and bodies, then, much better agile and active. Simple things like manually switching on/off the television in the absence of a remote control or having home-cooked dinner instead of ordering from a fast-food chain. but technological advancements or modernization may not be the only reason why the allure of sloth and idleness often gets the better of us.

Causes & Effects
Several factors can also be attributed to our inclination to lay idle and be unproductive. from experience, I usually give in to sloth when I am emotionally down, deeply burdened, or in pain (physical, emotional and at times, even spiritual). Not doing anything and retreating from the world almost always functions like a scapegoat — as if it is the most natural thing to do — whenever I am in this state of mind. When faced with occasional bouts of low self-esteem, dejections or failures, I notice that I easily succumb to indolence, letting the day slip by practically doing nothing. in the end, I feel exhausted mentally and physically slouchy. It deprives me of inner peace and joy.

Procrastination or when we put off doing something, can be another cause for sluggishness. Keeping our focus away from what we are supposed to do somehow encourages us to while away the time, justifying that it can wait and we can cram it up anyway at the last minute. this not only makes us ineffective, but also unproductive.

Not having a goal and clear direction or simply going through life with no motivation, can likewise cause us to dilly-dally, often becoming a couch potato. this psychological make-up can be detrimental to both our physical and mental health. a number of diseases such as obesity and diabetes are thought to also stem from having a sedentary lifestyle.

Preventive Measures
So what can be done to avoid sloth and idleness? a key point is to understand what triggers them in the first place. as exemplified, it can be the incidents and experiences that affect us emotionally. It can be our lack of discipline, especially when we delay the tasks at hand more often than not. It can be our over dependence on technology. or when we go about life just wandering. then, accepting that these issues do cause problems physically and mentally, can help us steer clear of chronic laziness. this way, we can consciously opt for better and healthier things to do the next time the inclination to slack off is at bay.

The Way Out
Setting concrete and manageable goals for each day, while mindful of the interplay between work and life balance, will give us a sense of purpose as each day dawns and unfolds. Accomplishing those goals while managing our time wisely, will then keep our minds and bodies busy, leaving no room to be languid and listless. One, but sure step at a time, will get us to our daily destinations. Incorporating simple and doable exercises that are up to our taste and ability, to our regular schedules will also be a wise investment. I hit some bumps along the road trying these principles out, but with persistence and constancy, they now work well for me.

Along the way, I have learned, too, that –

When we know we are able, useful and productive, it elicits positive effect in us both physically and mentally. When we have a bright disposition in life, and live for a reason, we ward off the negative in and around us, sloth and idleness included.

When we live sensibly, contributing to the good of our family, society and the world; when we live not so much for ourselves but more for others, we become better individuals inside out.
